Media reports on Support Services Job Cuts  - October 2005

The Staff Association is very concerned about stories in the media over the past couple of days about hundreds of redundancies likely from the Research Support Services (RSS) restructure and other major change projects. We are writing to the CEO, Dr Geoff Garrett about this.

The CSIRO Strategic Plan defines a number or the Organisation's major change projects including the RSS.
The Staff Association's understanding and consultation on the implementation of RSS has been to ensure:
  • quality and efficiency of support services,
  • quality of jobs and career paths and
  • fair treatment of staff in each change process.
We are looking for a reduction in bureaucracy through more streamlined processes to deliver cost savings.

The interests of staff lie with a successful restructure that provides better service to the research effort. We understood that jobs and work will change significantly but did not sign on to wholesale job cuts to meet savings targets.

The Staff Association has formed a consultative project group to interact and provide feedback to the CSIRO Executive on the RSS. Members of the Group are:

Steve McEvoy    NSW Councillor
David McCallum    Workplace Delegate, Minerals, Clayton
Joe Glover    Workplace Delegate, CMIS, Macquarie University
Nathan Oakes    Vic Organiser

This group has met with the RSS project management four times now, by telephone, to discuss models for the RSS. They are keen to receive input on all aspects of the project from members.

A number of members have contacted the Staff Association office with objections to the highly personal information they are being asked to supply by CSIRO for new security clearances.  The Staff Association has not been consulted at all about any of these new requirements, nor has any satisfactory explanation been given as to why the clearances are now required.  We have been seeking legal advice on the security clearances forms and are advising members that they should not supply any information that they feel uncomfortable with. more
